Leila

World’s sweetest dog looking for a new home… with a yard

Our sweet dog Leila has been with us since she was a puppy. She is friendly and affectionate, but is struggling with our move to an apartment. She isn’t super high energy, but she misses running around outside and misses us when we’re not at home during the day. She would be much happier with a human or canine companion who is usually home, and where she can run around in a yard. She can live with another dog but is very reactive when on a leash.

Pet's Name: Leila
Primary Breed (if not in list): Unknown mix from Ethiopia

What are your pet's favorite toys and activities?: She has a chew/tug of war toy that she sometimes tosses in the air to herself. But her favorite activities are running around outside (she’d love to chase squirrels if only I’d let her!) and plopping down next to her favorite humans for a nap.
What commands does your dog know?: She knows sit, stay, come, down, and high five. She is smart and receptive to training.
How does your dog react to being left alone for short periods?: If she is relaxed when we leave the house, she’s ok for 1-1.5 hours, perhaps longer. But other times she can be upset even with shorter absences. She has gotten better recently with training.
Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: She is reactive to other dogs when on a leash
Is there a particular routine that works best for your dog in terms of feeding, walking, and sleep?: She adapts well to our routine. Lately I’ve been walking her early in the mornings to avoid other dog walkers on the sidewalk.

What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: She loves to be with us. She also sighs in a way that sounds almost human, including a grumpy sigh when she’s feeling ignored. She can tell when we’re upset and comes over to comfort us. She had many endearing traits.
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: I think Leila would thrive in a family (or with an individual) who is home most of the time, or where she has a canine companion, and ideally where she could run around outside in a yard. And a family/individual who would give her lots of love.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: Leila is very sweet and has been a great dog and companion to us
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Housing is Inadequate for Pet
Rehoming reason details (if necessary): We moved from a house with a walled-in yard to a small apartment.
How long will you be able to keep your pet before you may need to consider surrendering him or her to a rescue?: Not an option, my pet will stay with me for as long as it takes
