Ms. Yoda

This is Ms. Yoda, a scruffy 14 lb. cutie with a mohawk. Although she’s a mix, she fits the temperament and energy of a Parson Russell terrier. She needs more exercise than we in our seventies can give her. My husband and I adopted her from the shelter 3 months ago. She had no known history but we know her well now as sweet, smart, athletic, comical, affectionate, friendly, trainable and a cuddle bug. She has a perfect score in house training.

Her favorite toys include the flirt pole and cardboard boxes. She is close to 3 years old, always up for an adventure, and ready to live her best life.

What are your pet's favorite toys and activities?: She loves the flirt pole, her tuffy squid, searching for hidden treats, car rides.
Has your dog received any formal obedience training?: Not Sure
What commands does your dog know?: She is very teachable. We taught her sit, stay, wait, come, down, give it, get in your crate, place. The latest tricks she is learning are sitting pretty and crawl.
Has your dog ever displayed any behavioral issues, such as biting another person or pet? If so, can you please provide details on what happened?: She is friendly and gentle with people but is reactive to other dogs. She has not bitten another dog since she has been with us. When playing tug of war she can occasionally grab your hand in a play bite and is learning not to do this. As is consistent with a terrier, we can’t say how she would behave with small children or cats. She does need to be the only pet in the household.
How does your dog react to being left alone for short periods?: She has some anxiety but is making progress. She is fine with short periods if she has a stuffed kong and music playing. A trainer told us that time will tell if she has true separation anxiety or if she’s simply adjusting to her new home. The vet has prescribed a low dose medication which seems to help her.
Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: When she sees or hears another dog she will bark and lunge on the leash. We live very close to the dog next door. She is beginning to learn that if she hears a dog bark, remains quiet and looks at me, she will get a tasty treat. So with this game, we see small improvements. She can startle at certain loud noises like people watching sports on tv or a a dish dropped in the kitchen. Then again, she is calm with a vacuum cleaner or a garbage truck going by.
Is there a particular routine that works best for your dog in terms of feeding, walking, and sleep?: Potty breaks early morning, two during the day, an extended walk, one before bed. She eats two meals a day. She likes to curl up in my lap in the evening. She sleeps well at night in her crate next to our bed. She doesn't like to be crated in the daytime except she will voluntarily hang out there with the door open waiting for her dinner. She walks well on leash on the sidewalk but wants to explore when on a longer lead.

Does your pet have any history of health issues or medical conditions that potential adopters should be aware of?: We know nothing of her history before we adopted her 3 months ago. What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: A home with an experienced dog person who knows the terrier temperament would be ideal. She needs to be the only pet. A fenced yard would be great also. She thrives on positive reinforcement training. She needs help with her reactivity to dogs and being home alone.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: She is friendly yet may be a bit shy meeting a stranger, especially if it’s a man. We don’t know how she would be with small children or cats.
