Akira is a four y/o husky that was rehomed to us in early March. Her previous owner needed to give her up for moving purposes and we couldn’t resist her beautiful eyes and playful nature. She enjoys running outside and likes playing fetch but is still grasping the ‘return’ part of that game. She does not bark very much, only when my roommate or I go into a room and close the door or leave the apartment completely.
Recently, Akira’s behavior has changed to a seemingly depressed mood. She does not play unless we take her outside, and even then, it takes a bit of coaxing to get her out. When we ask her if she wants to go out, she used to immediately jump up and stand by the door, circling our legs until the leash was clasped. Now, she will only sit and whine from her spot on the couch, her bed, or a bedroom floor. She will only go outside if we get a treat or one of her tennis balls.
She has also become slightly possessive of her toys. She has not bitten us but if we reach for a toy that is directly near her, she will shift her body weight to cover it or simply lunge her nose towards it. She does not growl or try to bite when doing this.
We are unsure if this behavior is because of her recently being spayed or if it is because of a new litter of kittens she is unable to reach in a room over. Please note that the kittens are not the reason we are looking to rehome Akira. The kittens will all also be going to new homes when they are of age.
We are unfortunately needing to rehome Akira because of costs and schedule changes. Our money is extremely tight as of right now and with said schedule changes, neither myself nor my roommate are home often enough to give her the proper exercise and playtime a husky deserves. We also live in an apartment building so we do not have a backyard we can let her run around in.
We are hoping a good family with plenty of free time and a decent yard will be able to give her the home she deserves. She seems to do decent with other dogs until they get a little to close to her personal bits and even then, we have not seen her lunge or try to bite. Only warning growls. She does decent with our cats but she does chase them every once in a while, and she will sometimes put her paws on their cat tree to get closer.
