Larkin

Hi!

My name is Larkin. I’m an 4 and a half-year old 30 pound female mutty mutt. My Mom and Dad were likely a Lab or Plott Hound, but I probably have American Pitbull terrier cousins. I’ve been spayed, micro-chipped, and have regular visits with my vet. I’ve had obedience training and walk well on leash.

I’m happiest when I’m doing something active with my owners. Want to go on a bike ride? I’ll keep you company. Want to walk or hike? The more miles, the better! Take me to the dog park and you can relax while I romp.

When I’m not active, I like being around my humans. My family’s young kids are fun. Visitors are fine – I’ll bark when they enter to say ‘hi,’ then settle. I’m ok when we visit mom’s parents (they have a cat) or homes with other dogs.

Grain-free dry dog food is yummy – especially if it begins with the word salmon. I do my business outside and will let you know when I need to do so. At night, I like to sleep in one of my beds (my owners said they’ll share them with you).

Two things you should know. First, I don’t like when small dogs bark at me. They make me anxious. Second, a neighbor who confused my barking at his small dog with attacking it, kicked and hit me – and I bit him on the wrist to make him stop. I felt really bad about it – it never happened before and hasn’t happened since.

If you’re an active family with a big yard and kids (if you have them) 10 years old or older, I’m your girl!

Has your dog ever shown any challenging behaviors, such as biting a person or another pet? If so, please share some context.: Our family—my husband, our 3-year-old, 9-month-old, and I—were playing and enjoying time in the backyard. Larkin, our dog, was outside with us but not on her leash. When she saw a man walking his smaller dog nearby, she ran over to greet them. However, something seemed to trigger her protective instincts—she often becomes alert and barks around the kids—causing her to bark and act excited. Understandably startled and concerned for his dog’s safety, the man began kicking at Larkin to keep her away. In response, Larkin bit his wrist. After the incident, she appeared visibly shaken, with her tail tucked between her legs. This was the first time in her four years with us that we had ever seen her behave this way; she had never bitten anyone before.
