Navy

Navy is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met. We’ve been together for 5 years and they have been some of the best of my life. Things have changed for us in those 5 years and for his best interest I’ve have to make the painful decision to try to find a more suitable life for him. He has always been used to my 12 hour shifts, but there was always someone else available to help care for him. I’ve tried very hard to make it work just he & I for a couple of years and we’ve made it, but my job is now an hour away keeping me away for even longer. I no longer have a yard for him to run around and play in. He has adapted well to the changes, but it breaks my heart for him. I love him so much that I can’t stand to see him be lonely or not have what he deserves. This has been a painful decision to make and it has taken me months to fully accept that this is the right thing to do. I just want to do it right and ensure he does to a person, family, or home that will love him as much as I do while being able to give him a life I can’t give in at this current moment.

Has your dog received any formal obedience training?: No
What commands does your dog know?: Sit, lay, down, up, no bark.
How does your dog react to being left alone for short periods?: Navy does very well when left alone. He does not require being in a crate, as he never has accidents inside and does not chew/tear things up.
Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: Navy does not like to be left, but he doesn’t panic and settles very quickly. He is very alert to noises so he may bark if he hears a door close outside or if someone knocks on the door, but only if his people are home and he knows it isn’t them returning. I have been told by neighbors that he is very quite when he is home alone. He is usually easily redirected. He also does not like car rides. If he sees other cars or people walking he gets very curious and whines or even barks because he can’t get to them.
Is there a daily routine that works well for your dog (feeding, walking, sleep)?: Navy has always been used to my healthcare work hours/switching between day shift and night shift. He settles into any routine. I always take him out as soon as I walk in, he will walk you back to the door when he is finished outside. He then gets food and water and then settles. This process is obviously repeated throughout the day. If he needs to go outside he will whine to alert someone and sit by the back door.

What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: Navy is truly the sweetest dog I’ve ever met. I have always felt very lucky about that. He doesn’t know a stranger whether that be a human or another pet. He once whined at the door so I thought he needed to go outside. As it turned out, there was an opossum outside and he knew. He immediately dragged me too it, wagging his tail and tried to become its friend. It played dead and when I got him away from it and back to the house it popped up and looked at me like that was crazy. I also thought it was crazy. Navy loved it.
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: I truly just want Navy to be able to have the yard that he deserves. He deserves more freedom than I can offer him at this time. I also want him to have more stability as far as presence goes. A family that will be able to be home with him more often than I am. He has nothing but love to offer and I don’t want him to feel lonely.
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Schedule, No Time
Details about rehoming reason (if needed): Navy has always been used to me working long hours, however there was always another person there to take him out, feed him, play with him, etc. That changed and I made it work just us two while I was in school and working full time. I have now graduated and my job is an hour away. So he spends most of his time alone. He is house trained and has never had an accident while I’ve been away, but that doesn’t make it fair to him to be alone for such long periods of time. I also no longer have a yard for him to be able to run and be free. I love him dearly and truly just want what is best for him. I am self aware enough to know that sometimes love isn’t enough justify things. He deserves all the love in the world, but also a more comfortable life and I don’t know that I will be in a position to offer him more comfort anytime soon. This hasn’t been an easy decision, but I do think it’s the right one for him.
