Henry

Henry was a foster fail in 2019 from a rescue in Dallas, Texas, where we lived at the time. We think he was about 3 when we got him, as far as we know he had been living in the streets until then. He was heartworm positive when we adopted him but we treated it and he has been healthy since.

Henry is extremely loving most of the time. What he wants most is to be near his people, mostly snoozing in his bed. He loves to sleep at or on top of your feet. He doesn't chew or destroy furniture , shoes, etc.

He is extremely smart and learns commands quickly.

Though he is getting older and slowing down some, he has been a great companion on many hikes and outdoor adventures.

We love him very, very much and want him to be safe and healthy.

Training History: He was fairly sick when we first got him, and his behavior issues seemed to start after he got better and during COVID, especially his resource guarding of my husband, see below. After quarantine ended we started working with a trainer. After moving to NY, we have been working with a veterinarian behaviorist for the past three years and a behaviorist trainer off and on for the past two and a half years. He is muzzle trained. We have made a lot of progress in general but some issues remain. He is also on a low dose flouxetine which has also helped.

Challenges: Henry is leash reactive, though that has gotten better with training. He still whimpers and barks when he sees another dog on a walk, but less and less so. We have another dog he gets along with (they cuddle and play together), and we never had any reports of issues at doggy daycare in Dallas. He also has some reactivity to environmental changes, mostly hand movement. It's also gotten better, but he will occasionally air snap at moving fingers or when pet on/around his head.

What commands does your dog know?: Sit, down, go to place

Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: His main issue has been resource guarding and protection, mainly of food and my husband. Both have been getting better with training and changes to the environment but still remain an issue. We manage his resource protection of my husband by not allowing him to be on the furniture next to my husband.

Has your dog ever shown any challenging behaviors, such as biting a person or another pet? If so, please share some context.: He has bitten twice, both times he bit me - the first time 5 years ago, I was naive about resource guarding and what that meant, I tried to take away something he had gotten from the garbage and he got my arm, breaking the skin. After that we started working on "drop it" and other tactics which have improved some of the guarding. He eats in the same room as our other dog and have not had problems with them, although we manage their eating situation. The second bite was last year and was much less easily predicted. I heard him chewing on something, it was early in the morning, still dark, the lights were out. I walked into the room where he was, near his bed, and he bit me, breaking the skin. It turned out he had gotten something from the kitchen that had peanut butter on it. He became calm once I got the lights on.

What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: Due to issues with our landlords homeowners insurance and their refusal to renew the insurance policy with Henry in the home, we are more urgently looking for a new home for Henry with someone who is able to work with his behavioral issues and understands the challenges that come with that.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: We have made a ton of progress with Henry. His trainers have been really impressed with how quickly he learns. He's a great companion and would thrive with the right person.
