Claire

Claire is ready to love and be loved in new forever home!

Name: Claire
Age: 7
Weight: 20lb
Breed: Mini Aussie / Chihuahua

Microchipped, fully vaccinated, spayed, no health issues

I’m relocating internationally this spring and sadly cannot bring my dog with me. I am looking to place her thoughtfully into a stable, loving forever home in Los Angeles or nearby.

Claire is a 7-year-old, 20-lb Chihuahua / Mini Aussie mix. She’s smart, silly, and very affectionate - a true velcro dog. Her fur is incredibly soft.

She gets along well with other dogs and cats, and is playful and well-behaved at home. She's lived with a cat for several weeks before and had a blast playing with him.

She can be reactive on leash, but it’s highly manageable and improves with consistency. She can walk on a leash without issue next to dogs she's familiar with. Indoors and off-leash she’s relaxed and social.

She has no health issues that require management and is fully vaccinated/spayed.

What are your pet's favorite toys and activities?: Walks and any toys that squeak
Has your dog received any formal obedience training?: No
What commands does your dog know?: Sit, stay, lie down, shake, drop it/leave it, touch (hold up a hand and she'll stand and put her paws on it), "be nice" (so she takes a treat gently from your fingers)
How does your dog react to being left alone for short periods?: Looks a little sad then goes to sleep
Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: On-leash reactivity -- she'll often get hyperfixated when she sees other dogs on walks. She'll sometimes bark, particularly at small dogs. To manage it, I carry treats to distract her and/or say "that's okay", "leave it"
Is there a daily routine that works well for your dog (feeding, walking, sleep)?: Morning walk, afternoon walk, 5pm dinner, evening walk. Optional night walk - sometimes she's lazy and doesn't want to go outside in the dark.

Additional notes about your dog’s health history:: A vet told me she had kennel cough as a puppy, but x-rays years later showed she'd had bronchitis. Her breathing can be a little impacted when she gets excited, but it doesn't require active management. I just have her wear a harness, not a collar.
Has your dog ever shown any challenging behaviors, such as biting a person or another pet? If so, please share some context.: On-leash reactivity: I don't have her interact with other dogs on walks because she can get feisty. She'll sometimes bark, particularly at small dogs. There's never been any serious incidents - no bites, just unappealing snarling. It's highly manageable because she's small. To manage it, I carry treats to distract her and/or say "that's okay", "leave it". Off-leash: she gets along with most dogs but needs 10-15 min to warm up to them at first, then tends to ignore them. LOVES to run around a yard with other dogs, but tends to ignore them indoors. She's never once been aggressive to a human.
How often does your dog require grooming (e.g., bathing, brushing, trimming)? : Quarterly grooming/nail trimming
Does your dog have a dental care routine (e.g., brushing, chews, professional cleanings)?: Annual professional cleaning

How is your dog with other dogs?: Selective: Gets along with some dogs but not others.
How is your dog with cats?: Friendly: Generally gets along well with cats.
What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: Claire has a HUGE heart. She just wants to be a part of every moment. When it comes to humans, Claire has negative stranger danger. She really believes every human exists to be friends with. If we're stopped in the car and she sees people standing outside, she's stare at them, wag her tail, and jump up because she wants to say hi. If we're in the car at the airport and there's a couple kissing goodbye, she'll whine because she wants to be part of the moment.
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: I'd love for her to have a yard, since I never gave her one. I don't want her to be left alone from 9-5, since she's never had to regularly spend that much time alone before.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: Claire will try to kiss the inside of your mouth and she'll get you when you least expect it. Also, she is a jumper, which is the only reason I'd say she wouldn't be perfect around toddlers.
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Moving
Details about rehoming reason (if needed): I am relocating internationally for a job opportunity that requires regular travel.
If applicable, do you have the legal right or necessary permission from the breeder or rescue organization to rehome this pet? :
Not Applicable
Yes
How long will you be able to keep your pet before you may need to consider surrendering him or her to a rescue?: Two months
Who is your veterinarian?: Banfield Hospital
What do you feed your pet, and does he/she have any feeding quirks or preferences?: Around 5pm she'll start staring at me and that'll remind me it's dinner time. I'll say "is it dinner time?" and she'll get excited. I'll have her lie down and wait for me to put the food in the bowl. She won't go eat the food until I say "Go get it"
