Moose

Moose: Big Heart, Big Personality, Looking for His Forever Home

Moose is a handsome Pit Bull mix with a big personality, a goofy spirit, and an even bigger heart. At approximately 14 months old and around 67 pounds, he’s still very much a puppy at heart, even if he doesn’t realize how big he is anymore.

Moose is affectionate, playful, and loves being around his people. One of his favorite things is flopping dramatically onto his back in front of you for belly rubs. He also loves playing fetch, carrying around a ball, and chewing on his favorite bones and chew toys. Once he’s had some exercise and playtime, he’s happy to settle down and enjoy cuddles and attention.

Moose is fully house trained and crate trained. He currently sleeps in his kennel at night and is comfortable there, though he would likely do well sleeping in his own dog bed, too. He has only had one accident in the house recently, which appeared to be a submissive reaction rather than a house-training issue.

As a young dog, Moose has plenty of energy and is still working on his manners and impulse control. He knows several basic commands, including sit, stay, down, and leave it. He is very food-motivated and responds well to treats during training. Like many adolescent dogs, he can struggle to focus when he’s overly excited, but he has shown that he is capable of learning and responds well to positive reinforcement.

When meeting new people, Moose tends to have one of two reactions: he either gets very excited and wants to jump up to say hello, or he acts a little shy at first. Once he warms up, he is friendly and affectionate. I have not observed any aggression toward people.

Moose has spent time around older children and has done well, but because of his size and enthusiasm, I believe he would be a better fit for a home with older kids who won’t be easily knocked over by an excited greeting. He still acts like a puppy and isn’t always aware of his own strength.

Around other dogs, Moose can become very excited and overstimulated. He has not shown aggression, but he does need continued work on appropriate greetings and remaining calm when encountering other dogs. On walks, he can become very focused on distractions such as dogs, squirrels, and other exciting things in his environment. Fortunately, he is highly motivated by treats and toys and can usually be redirected with consistency.

Moose has been around cats and has generally shown curiosity rather than aggression. If he gets too enthusiastic trying to sniff or investigate, he typically backs off when corrected by the cat and moves on.

He is used to having plenty of appropriate chew toys available and has not been destructive in the home. He occasionally checks out what’s on the counters, but understands being told to get down.

Moose would thrive with an active person, couple, or family who can provide regular exercise, continued training, and lots of love. He is a sweet dog with so much potential and would make a wonderful companion for someone willing to invest a little time and consistency into helping him mature into the amazing dog he’s capable of being.

This decision has been incredibly difficult, but my goal is to find Moose a stable, loving home where he can receive the time, attention, and opportunities he deserves. He is a special dog, and I want to find the right match for him.

Pet's Name: Moose
Dog: Primary Breed: American Pitbull Terrier
Birthdate (an estimate is okay): 04/2025
Age Category: Young
Where did you get your pet?: Moose came into my life unexpectedly as a puppy and was originally intended to be a temporary foster. Circumstances changed, and I ultimately became his sole caregiver. While I love him very much, recent housing and financial challenges have made it clear that I can no longer provide the level of time, training, and stability he deserves. My priority is finding him a loving home where he can thrive.
Was this pet ever in a shelter, rescue, or foster program? If yes, please provide details.: No
Adoption Day (when did you adopt your pet? An estimate is okay.): 09/2025
Gender: Male

What are your pet's favorite toys and activities?: He loves balls and playing fetch.
Has your dog received any formal obedience training?: No
What commands does your dog know?: Sit, Stay, Down, Leave it
How does your dog react to being left alone for short periods?: He does well. I’ve never left him alone without being kenneled though and he does seem to find comfort in being kenneled when left alone.
Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: Extremely loud noises seem to distress him. Specifically, very loud or close fireworks
Is there a daily routine that works well for your dog (feeding, walking, sleep)?: Moose does best with regular opportunities for bathroom breaks, typically every 6–8 hours during the day, with a longer stretch overnight after his final potty break before bed. He is fully house trained and does well as long as he has consistent access to go outside. He is generally fed twice a day. He usually eats breakfast within an hour of his morning potty break and dinner in the evening, about 1–2 hours before his final walk and bedtime routine. Fresh water is available to him throughout the day. For exercise, Moose enjoys a short walk in the morning and evening, along with a longer walk, play session, or game of fetch later in the day. Regular physical activity helps him burn off energy and settle more easily. He especially loves playing with a ball and benefits from both exercise and mental engagement. While his schedule has varied at times, Moose has shown that he can adapt to changes in routine as long as his basic needs for bathroom breaks, exercise, and attention are consistently met.

Additional notes about your dog’s health history:: Seems to have sensitive skin, but nothing too major. I use a sensitive shampoo on him and moisturize his skin a bit after with coconut oil.
Has your dog ever shown any challenging behaviors, such as biting a person or another pet? If so, please share some context.: No
How often does your dog require grooming (e.g., bathing, brushing, trimming)? : I bathe him at least once a month unless he’s gotten messy playing outside or if he seems very itchy which is rare. His nails need trimmed every couple weeks. I’ve been trying to get the quicks down as his nails seem to grow quickly.
Does your dog have a dental care routine (e.g., brushing, chews, professional cleanings)?: No, I have brushed his teeth here and there, but a better routine would likely make him easier to do that with. I know regular dental hygiene plays a big role in a healthy pup. I believe he would benefit from some dental chews as well.

How is your dog with other dogs?: Friendly: Generally gets along well with other dogs.
How is your dog with cats?: Neutral: Doesn't mind cats but doesn't interact much with them.
What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: Moose’s most endearing quality is that he loves with his whole heart. He’s still a big, floppy puppy who gets excited about everything, but beneath all that energy is a sweet, affectionate dog who wants nothing more than to play, cuddle, and be part of the family.
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: The most important thing to me is finding a stable, loving home that is committed to Moose for the long term and willing to continue investing in his training and development. Moose is a wonderful dog with a sweet personality and a lot of potential, but he is still a young, energetic adolescent who needs consistency, structure, and guidance to help him succeed. I would love for him to be with an active individual or family who can provide regular exercise, playtime, and attention. A fenced yard would be great, but it is not required if his family is committed to meeting his physical and mental exercise needs through walks, training, enrichment, and play. Experience with large-breed or bully-breed dogs would be a plus, but it is not a requirement. What matters most is that his adopter is willing to learn and, if needed, work with a professional trainer to help Moose continue building good manners and confidence during the transition into a new home. Moose could potentially do well as an only dog or with another dog if the match is right. He gets very excited around other dogs and can have difficulty focusing when there is a lot of stimulation, so any introductions should be thoughtful and managed appropriately. Because of his size and enthusiasm, I believe a home with older children would be the best fit. While I have never seen aggression from Moose, he can be unaware of his own strength and may accidentally knock over a small child when excited. Any interactions with younger children should be carefully supervised and supported with continued training. Above all, I want Moose to be with people who will be patient, loving, and committed to helping him grow into the incredible dog I know he can be. Finding the right family is very important to me.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: Moose is not yet neutered, but he is scheduled for his neuter appointment. He is a healthy, active young dog who is still maturing and learning, and he responds well to consistent training and positive reinforcement.
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Other, Not in List
Details about rehoming reason (if needed): After unexpectedly becoming Moose’s sole caregiver, I have faced housing and financial challenges that have made it difficult to meet the needs of a young, active dog. While I care deeply about him, I believe he would be happiest in a home that can provide more time, consistency, training, and attention.
If applicable, do you have the legal right or necessary permission from the breeder or rescue organization to rehome this pet? :
Not Applicable
Yes
How long will you be able to keep your pet before you may need to consider surrendering him or her to a rescue?: Two months
Who is your veterinarian?: N/A
What do you feed your pet, and does he/she have any feeding quirks or preferences?: No quirks, but very food motivated. He is not free fed and if food is leftover out, it will be demolished!
Would you consider a long-distance adoption?:
Yes
No
Maybe
