Buddy

Big Ol baby Black German Shepherd

Buddy is an amazing 2 and 1/2-year-old all black German Shepherd. He followed my wife 2 and 1/2 mi. He was abandoned at a long road at the end of it. When we got him and they scanned him he did have a chip. He was 1-year-old. He weighed 84 lb, now a year and a half later he weighs 150 lb. Amazingly smart. Potty trained does great on walks. But unfortunately we have two pities that were rescued and the oldest female. She is 9 years old. For some reason buddy kind of bullies her and he has snapped at her several times.
This dog would be an amazing dog for a family that wants one dog. He is a handful because he's very big. He does have anxiety which most German shepherds do and he is on Trazodone
I've taken a lot of time to get him where he walks perfect with me. He used to try to chase the squirrels. Now I tell him no and he just watches them. He used to bark at any larger dogs that was close to him. Now he doesn't
Because he is so large I have many people want to approach us and talk to us. He used to be a little apprehensive now as long as I reassure him that the people are good and I bring his leash all the way to me and tell him to settle. He will be good and the people get to pet him children also. My vet and a trainer that I talked to said it sounds like he was probably beaten so we consider him a special needs. As far as attention. He doesn't like thunder, lightning or any loud noise. He kind of freaks out will always come to me or my wife. I would love to be able to keep him but it's not fair to the other two dogs, especially Bella. The older Pitbull that he bullies her and she is very afraid to come in a room where he is at. We love him to death but we want to make sure he has a good home and that our other dogs are not afraid and get to live the life they should.
Please reach out at any time. I live out near the Houston area of Texas and I would be willing to meet a person halfway. Let's say Dallas to San Antonio if it was very serious. Obviously I would need to meet up with the person. Have them meet buddy and make sure to match. I'm not here just to dump him off on somebody. I want to make sure he has a home that will love him just like we do but probably just him as one dog. Unless you are a person that has had experience with German shepherds and knows their nature, I would say you'd want to be a family most likely teenager and above if you have kids or a husband and wife or even one person that wants a beautiful black German Shepherd that is loving till you can't believe

Has your dog ever shown any challenging behaviors, such as biting a person or another pet? If so, please share some context.: He has never even bit a person or look like he was going to. He has when we first got them the first month or two. He would bark at people if I was walking him and dogs. I have had him over a year and a half. He now walks perfect right next to me. If he sees a squirrel his ears will blight up or if he sees big dogs I make sure I walk to the right and I will tell him to settle and he does well. Now that being said, we have two other rescues that are pities. They weigh about 50 lb. One of them. The oldest is 9 years old, a female who is gentle and loving and Buddy has a rescue guarding issue with me. The last couple weeks she has came by and twice he actually has jumped at her for no reason. Grabbed the back of her neck and shook her. I scold him and he goes into the walk-in pantry and he will stay there until I tell him it's okay to come out. The whole reason why we are wanting to rehome in. We do not want him to hurt one of our other dogs and then have to euthanize them, which would be the most worst thing in the world. If a person doesn't have any dogs, he would be the most wonderful dog to have in the world. He loves attention. He's a big baby. He loves to be petted and cuddled and squeezed on. He loves to go on walks. He's a fantastic eater. He's well disciplined and he used to bark at people at our backyard when you see him walk by cuz we have an open back fence and now if he does that you just clap your hands and he will stop and come over to you.
How often does your dog require grooming (e.g., bathing, brushing, trimming)? : About every every 5 or 6 months I need to bring him to the vet. They do have to sedate him and then they cut his nails. We give him a bath about every 5 or 6 months with special oatmeal shampoo and his coat looks absolutely gorgeous. We do feed them salmon every third day. We put salmon, oil or Omega oils in their dog food along with a mushroom protein and fresh string beans and sweet potatoes. So his coat looks amazing
Does your dog have a dental care routine (e.g., brushing, chews, professional cleanings)?: We give them Frozen string beans and sweet potatoes which really help. Also we do buy the greenies which help out

How is your dog with children?: Not sure: Haven't had enough interaction with children to determine.
How is your dog with other dogs?: Selective: Gets along with some dogs but not others.
How is your dog with cats?: Not sure: Haven't had enough interaction to determine.
What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: Buddy is the most loving dog to all my family members, my wife and me especially. He loves to lay with us on the couch or I will lay on the floor with him. He loves to be petted and just held. He is honestly a huge lap dog
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: My biggest concern criteria would be that they have a big yard that he can run in. But also that they spend time to take him out for a walk at least once a day if not twice. He is very high energy so if you don't take them out on a walk he will start to get very antsy. His anxiety starts to show up. Currently he is on 500 mg of trazodone. I give him three one and a half pill dosage once in the morning once the afternoon and at night now if it's thundering or raining I will give him two at night to help him sleep. He will sleep next to the bed in front of it or next to my wife. Ideally, I think he would be great for a husband and wife as a protector for them. He loves running in a big yard. He needs walks for sure. I am not really sure how he would do with other dogs and to be honest I would say he would need to be a one dog family
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: It took buddy about a month to really acclimate to our house remembering that we already had three rescue dogs so it was a chore. It has been pretty good except he does bully the two pitbulls one which is so timid that she is scared to death of him. She will not go in the room if he's there or if she wants to. I have to have buddy walk away with me so he can go into an office that my wife works for. The one thing I would say is if you have another dog this could be a very big challenge. And honestly I would say you shouldn't have any dogs. No cats. He should be by himself and give him a lot of love and attention and he would be an amazing dog. He is still a puppy. He just turned 2 and 1/2 years old. He weighs 149 lb. He's a big boy but he's a big baby
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Too Many Pets
Details about rehoming reason (if needed): Well the details I've already said and most of this but it's just he is bullying my one dog that is a sweetheart a pitbull that is very mellow but she is very skittish and afraid of Buddy. He has occasionally snapped at her and a couple weeks ago he grabbed the back of her neck and shook her. I yelled at him and of course he let her go but she was really shaken by that. And it's not fair to her. We originally got this dog thinking we could find the owner and when the owner would not respond to the vet for 2 weeks of calling. We thought oh we might have bitten off more than we can chew but I have been patient and trained him well but he still needs training
If applicable, do you have the legal right or necessary permission from the breeder or rescue organization to rehome this pet? :
Not Applicable
Yes
How long will you be able to keep your pet before you may need to consider surrendering him or her to a rescue?: Two months
Who is your veterinarian?: Animal Care Center-Lake Houston,Texas +12813242615
What do you feed your pet, and does he/she have any feeding quirks or preferences?: We feed them either a dog food that is only lamb and rice or salmon or beef. Along with that he gets half a cup of string beans or sweet potatoes. With his kibble and many times I will make like a turkey stew that I blend up that has cabbage, broccoli, chicken, turkey, sometimes chicken and we put that as a topper.. but buddy is not a picky eater. No because we have the three other dogs buddy eats his food in a separate room and when he's done and the other dogs are done we let him out
Do you currently have pet insurance?: No
Would you consider a long-distance adoption?:
Yes
No
Maybe
