Are there any specific triggers that cause your dog anxiety or stress?: Reason Electra needs to be rehomed… We want to be completely transparent about why we are making the difficult decision to find Electra a new home. This is not a decision we have made lightly, and our priority is finding a situation where Electra and everyone around her can feel safe and secure. The primary reason is that Electra is no longer getting along safely with our other dog. The two have gotten into several intense and unpredictable fights over the last four years, and because our other dog is smaller, we can no longer risk the possibility of someone being seriously hurt. Electra has not shown this type of fighting behavior with other dogs, and she has never bitten a person. In our home, some of the conflict appears to involve resource guarding of her person from our other dog. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, the unpredictability and intensity of the fights have made managing the two dogs together increasingly difficult and unsafe. Electra can also become nervous and unsure around younger children, and when she is uncomfortable, she may communicate that by growling. We take those signals seriously and believe she would be happiest in a home without young children. We have not ignored these challenges. We worked with professional trainers at Performance K9 to address her fear-based behaviors, and Electra made significant improvements through that training. We provided some videos from her training. She is capable of learning, responding to structure, and making progress when given consistent guidance. Ultimately, the biggest concern is the relationship between our two dogs. Living with the possibility of another unpredictable fight is not fair or safe for either of them, particularly our smaller dog. We believe the responsible and loving choice is to find Electra a home where she does not have to navigate that conflict. Because of her history in our home, we want to be thoughtful and cautious about her placement. We believe Electra would do best as the only dog in the home and in a home without young children, with an experienced and committed owner who will continue providing structure, training, exercise, and plenty of love. We love Electra and rehoming her is incredibly difficult. This decision comes from wanting both dogs to have the opportunity to live in homes where they can feel safe, relaxed, and successful. Our goal is not simply to find Electra another home. It is to find her the right home.

What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: Electra is a sweet, silly goofball! She’s a loving and loyal girl who forms a strong bond with her person and is happiest simply being near you.

What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: Type of home Electra needs is one with no young children, no other pets, and access to a backyard. A person that can dedicate time to walks, play, and bonding.

Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: Behavioral & Training History When Electra was about 10 months old, we recognized that she was struggling with fear and insecurity in certain situations and that we needed professional help beyond our own training experience. After an obedience consultation, we were referred to a behaviorist experienced in working with aggression and fear-based behaviors. Electra is not an aggressive dog in her everyday interactions. However, certain situations and triggers could make her feel fearful or unsure, and she would communicate her discomfort through behaviors such as barking, growling, cowering, or trying to hide. Electra has never bitten a person. At the time, Electra lived with our 3-year-old female dog, who has a more easygoing temperament and is comfortable around other dogs, people, and public environments. One of the challenges we noticed was that Electra could become protective of and resource guard her person, particularly around our other dog. She could also be uncomfortable with unfamiliar people or people she had not yet developed trust with, including some house guests. We felt it was important to take these behaviors seriously rather than ignore or minimize them, which is why we sought professional help early. With training, structure, and consistent use of the techniques we learned, Electra made significant progress in managing situations that previously made her fearful or nervous. An electric collar was used throughout her training with K9 Performance and during training at home after the program. It was gradually reduced in usage and is rarely utilized at this point. She learned to respond to redirection and commands such as “go to your place,” became more comfortable with house guests and larger gatherings, and improved significantly on walks. She continues to respond very well to the structure and skills she learned through training. Overall, Electra showed us that she is very capable of learning and responding to consistent guidance. She does best when she knows what is expected of her and has a person who can calmly redirect her when she feels uncertain. Electra’s history is something we want any potential adopter to fully understand. She is a loving, loyal dog who can thrive with someone who understands canine body language, respects when she is communicating discomfort, and is willing to continue providing the consistency, boundaries, and positive guidance that help her feel secure.
