Parker

Parker is a spunky, sweet 7 year old chihuahua mix. He is beloved by his family but we cannot give him the life he deserves right now. He needs a family who can meet him where he is and help him navigate the world, but he is a loving, fun and constant companion who brings joy to many many people. He is incredibly smart and a fast learner.

Is there a daily routine that works well for your dog (feeding, walking, sleep)?: Parker wakes up in the morning and likes to take a quick walk to go to the bathroom. He needs at least two walks a day and also will enjoy playing. For food, hes not super food motivated, but he'll eat twice a day (first time after the morning walk and then sometime for dinner). He'll nap for most of the morning after his walk, but then will need to go out again at some point. He is able to adjust to your schedule (will go to bed later/earlier depending on what you want), but definitely needs some time moving around!

He has a luxating patella on his left side, so he has to be very careful (no rigorous playing, no do parks, just walks and light play at home). He also takes joint supplements to help with his mobility, and will need to be properly exercised in ways that keep him mobile but dont stress his body.Parker also takes a liver supplement for slightly elevated ALT levels in his liver. Hes had some teeth extractions before, but this year he got his teeth cleaned with no extractions. He also has to eat a low fat diet because his pancreas cannot process normal dog food (even the fancy kind!) The food he eats (which any vet can perscribe) is royal canin low fat high fiber.

He also has resource guarding of his home and needs to be properly introduced to new people who come over (go on a walk with them). He has a bite history (never broken skin but has bitten pants) of people who have come to the home unannounced and his fearful of new people. He does not do well with strangers coming up to him to try to say hi and again needs to be properly introduced. If you hold him in public (he likes to be in a backpack or just carried) he'll be completely fine, but he needs to have proper space from strangers.

How is your dog with cats?: Not sure: Haven't had enough interaction to determine.
What's the most endearing thing about your dog?: He is incredible smart, expressive and funny! He learns things so quickly and has a funny little personality. He lovessss his people and will be a constant source of entertainment.
What criteria are important to you when considering an adoptive family or home for your pet?: A family that can bring Parker with them or be home with him most of the time. Also an environment that allows them to put the right guardrails in place (controlled meetings with strangers and new dogs). Also he would love space to run around (a yard, a house) so a suburban or more rural setting is important.
Is there anything else you'd like your pet's new family to know?: Parker has had many dog sitters who absolutely love him. While taking care of him takes a little work, he is beyond beloved by many (his last sitter cried when we moved because she loved him so much!)
Why are you rehoming your pet (primary reason)?: Schedule, No Time
Details about rehoming reason (if needed): I live alone in a studio in new york which is not a good environment for parker. The city is overstimulating for him and I can't be home enough for him.
